Trustees Approve Plans for Community Safe Room/Gym at LFU
- Updated: November 22, 2013

Los Fresnos CISD Board of Trustees took a major step toward a project that will benefit the school district and community by approving architectural plans for the Community Shelter in Connection with the Texas Safe Shelter Initiative.
The plans submitted by the firm Gomez, Mendez, Saenz required approval of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The Community Safe Room will double as a competition gymnasium for Los Fresnos United as the school continues its expansion.
The Board’s Facilities Committee reviewed plans for the 20,000-square foot building at a meeting last week. Under FEMA guidelines, the federal government pays 75 percent ($1.8 million) of the $2.4 million project, while the school district pays 25 percent ($600,000).
The concrete dome will serve as a 1,600-seat gymnasium and multi-purpose center for LFU. In county-declared emergencies, the facility will be used as a Safe Room for county residents.
