County Attorneys Help Children Get Sneakers
- Updated: December 13, 2013
Thanks to the generosity of the Women’s Law Section of the Cameron County Bar Association, 82 needy Los Fresnos CISD students will get some help for new shoes.
As part of its Sneakers for Students program, the attorneys got help from fellow attorneys and judges to raise more than $5,000 for the project.
“Somehow, we pulled this off, with the help of sponsors, attorneys and judges,” said Gloria Rincones, President of the group. “Our goal was $5,000, and we raised $5,300.
We were excited because this type of project had never been done. This is our way to give back to our community.”
The group targeted the nine school districts in Cameron County, and made sure students at each district received funds based on enrollment.
The students identified will receive gift card vouchers of $10 each.
“There is such a need for shoes for children, because kids outgrow them and wear them out,” Los Fresnos CISD Superintendent Gonzalo Salazar said.
Students were selected by the Parental Involvement and the Advanced Academics offices, which works with counselors around the district.
Rincones and attorneys Estella Chavez-Vasquez and Maria Linda Gonzalez presented the vouchers to Salazar for distribution to the identified students.
