Molina Healthcare Shares Story with Area Chamber of Commerce
- Updated: October 4, 2014
The general meeting for Area Chamber of Commerce was held on noon Tuesday, September 23, at the Los Fresnos Inn & Suites meeting room.
After the beginning ceremonies, Executive Director Mr. Val Champion then introduced the guest speaker, Ms. Sandra Medrano of Molina Healthcare. Ms. Medrano explained that Molina Healthcare helps mothers, children, families, and seniors gain access to quality care by navigating the healthcare system. She then shared a video presentation highlighting the history of Molina Healthcare. The Molina Healthcare story is about one man’s belief that when it comes to health care everyone should be treated like family.
In 1980 when as an emergency room physician, C. David Molina, MD, noticed that low-income, uninsured or non-English speaking patients were coming to the emergency room in need of general health care services. Without family doctors, they were not always getting the right care and information. These underserved families deserved better and Dr. Molina set out to do something about it. He opened a clinic in Long Beach, California to provide low-income individuals and families with a place to go to get personalized health care from Molina doctors. Two more clinics opened that same year and today their health plans and clinics serve patients across the country. What started out as a mission to treat patients like family had become the Molina family mission.
Never forgetting their roots, the Molina children, who were once put in charge of sweeping the floors, stocking shelves and filing medical records now lead the company’s operations and strategic direction. All guests attending the general meeting received a bag containing promotional items from Molina Healthcare. The meeting continued with the introduction of new members; Mr. Henry Rodriguez of Gulf Coast Credit Repair, Ms. Leticia Uribe of New Look Hair Studio, and Mr. Carlos De La Rosa of De La Rosa & Company CPA’s. Also introduced was special visiting guest Laura Howell from University of Texas at Brownsville. All in attendance expressed their gratitude to Julia’s Restaurant for catering the event once again.
Val Champion announced the schedule for ribbon cuttings for new businesses. On October 4 there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony for Gulf Coast Credit Repair and on October 9 there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony for State Farm Insurance, contact the Area Chamber of Commerce for times and locations. An announcement was also made regarding the cancellation of the Halloween Festival and Octoberfest for 2014. The cancellation was due to the festival conflicting with the Falcon’s Homecoming game schedule. Also announced was the upcoming 5th annual Leo Aguilar Foundation & LFCISD 5K Walk/Run for Fun & Community Health Fair schedule for October 18.
All Chamber members, guests and interested parties are invited to attend the next general meeting.
