DONNA – During the recently completed 2014 volleyball season, two Lower Valley teams dominated the volleyball scene, the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons and the Brownsville Veterans Lady Chargers. Though the Lady Falcons were able to win 3 out of the 4 times these two teams played this year, they were always hard-fought battles showcasing the two most talented teams of the area. At Donna North High School this past Sunday afternoon, the rest of the Rio Grande Valley found out what could happen when these two powerful teams joined forces in the Rio Grande Valley All-Star Game.

Four Lady Falcon seniors, along with four Lady Chargers, led the East squad to a dominating victory over the top seniors from the Upper Valley this past Sunday afternoon. The East powered their way to a 23-25, 25-22, 25-14, 25-13 over the West squad, represented by seniors from the traditional Upper Valley powerhouses of Nikki Rowe, McAllen, and McAllen Memorial. This was the first victory by the East over the West in a while, according to the director of the Texas Association of Sports Officials (TASO) who organized this game again this year.

Seniors Peyton Sales, Alex Moya, Jordan Martinez, and Alex Cano represented the Lady Falcons on the East squad, and closed out their stellar high school careers with a victory. With 18 girls on the East roster and led by Coach Jennifer Martinez from Harlingen, playing time was very evenly distributed between the all-stars. Each young lady played well and represented their school team with honor.

Statistically, Maritza Cardenas from Veterans and Paloma Trevino from Lopez led the East squad with 13 kills each. Cano and Martinez chipped in 8 and 4 kills, respectively. Alex Moya displayed her defensive wizardry one last time for the Lady Falcon faithful, contributing 11 digs and stellar back-row play. Peyton Sales entered the game during the second set, helping break a 16-16 tie by assisting Trevino on three straight kills, along with adding another 11 assists and all-around play in the fourth and deciding set, finishing the game by leading the East with 17 assists, 4 digs, and 1 kill.

Volleyball season has wrapped up for these seniors, but exciting times are just around the corner for the Lady Falcons, as they reload for another run at the district title beginning next August. But, these four All-Stars from Los Fresnos reminded all in attendance that all were watching a special group of Lady Falcons, and they will not be easily replaced.

Congratulations, 2014 Lady Falcon Volleyball, and good luck to these Lady Falcon All-Stars!
