Hundreds Turn Out for Transportation Fair

More than 200 Olmito community residents attended a Connected Communities Multimodal and Active Transportation Fair Saturday at Villareal Elementary School.
The Fair was intended to bring community members together to help designate the location of a new bus stop/shelter that will serve the area.

Residents are encouraged to attend and learn more about transportation needs, means of transport, and future transportation options. Educational materials will be presented about existing bus routes and destinations, as well as about a proposed bike route in Olmito.

The Fair is part of the Connected Communities project, which raises awareness to low-income communities and area residents by educating them and collecting data in engaging ways.
BikeTexas and the City of Brownsville brought more than 100 bicycles and helmets that fair participants used. Some participants, including Villarreal Elementary principal Yliana Gonzalez, brought their own bicycles.

There were giveaways to participants, and 14 donated bicycles were raffled to students who attended.

A bus toured Olmito residents around the area to solicit ideas about improving transportation in Olmito, including sidewalks, bicycle lanes and a bus stop/shelter.

Joint sponsors of the Fair were Valley Metro, Los Fresnos CISD, Community Development Corporation of Brownsville, BikeTexas, Brownsville Metro, the City of Brownsville and the BC Workshop.

BikeTexas is a non-profit, state-wide organization advances bicycle access, safety and education.
