Student Film Chosen in UIL Filmmaker’s Festival

Los Fresnos High School sophomore Salvador Vargas, who created the short film “Who’s Wright,” has advanced to the second round in the UIL Filmmaker’s Festival in the Division 2: Narrative category.

There are 112 entries remaining in this division and film category, the one that received the highest number of entries in the state over Animation and Documentary categories.
The top three of the 112 films advancing in the second round will advance to semifinals. State finalists will have their films screened at the Paramount Theatre in Austin Feb. 18.
Vargas, who is the Sophomore Class president and is involved in multiple school activities, is part of the UIL Film Club at LFHS.

“I became interested in making films last year by doing Instagram videos,” said Vargas, who wrote, directed and produced the film. “I started writing the script at the start of the school year and two months later, I started to film.

The film features the Wright Brothers who invented and built the world’s first successful airplane in 1903.

There were five actors in the silent film and 10 extras. Props for the film were borrowed from the LFHS Theatre Arts Department.

The film starred Vargas, Valarie Tellez, Alexa Rodriguez, Jesus Sauceda and Victoria Vital. History teacher Joseph Hugonett also played the teacher in the film.

“People said my video has a lot of potential,” Vargas. “I really want to become an independent filmmaker or a director.”
