LFHS Students Making Fishing Poles for Kids’ Fishing Tournament
- Updated: May 15, 2015
Los Fresnos High School students are making 1,500 fishing poles for the 6th Annual Hooked For Life, Kids Gone Fish’n Tournament Saturday.
The free event will be held at the resaca next to the Brownsville Events Center. The rescue will be stocked with 5,000 pounds of freshwater catfish.
Participating children ages 6 to 16 will receive a rod-and-reel combo, free t-shirts, and goodies while supplies last. The event is dedicated to its founder, David Mendez, who died in 2014.
About 1,500 children are expected. LFHS principal Ronnie Rodriguez, a member of the Hooked for Life Board of Directors, turned making fishing poles into an educational experience.
“I saw this first-hand last year when I took my grand-daughter, and I really wanted our students to be part of something like this,” Rodriguez said. “It’s a great cause, and I thought it would be a good learning experience for them and provide a good community service.”
Students in the animal science classes, welding classes and volunteers are working in the LFHS library assembling the rods and reels.
“I asked the Hooked for Life board if we could help somehow, so they brought us 1,500 rods and reels, and we’re putting them together this week.”
