Board Meeting Report: Student Success Highlights Evening

Ten student groups were recognized to highlight the Los Fresnos CISD Board of Trustees’ regular meeting Monday evening.

The recognition of student success packed the Board Room/Training Center, as dozens of parents watched and took photos of their children who were honored for their achievements.

Highlighting the groups was the introduction of LFHS valedictorian Brianna Garcia, who recently was named a National Merit Scholar. She was showered with praise by LFHS principal Ronnie Rodriguez, who called her “the best of the best of the best.”

Garcia also addressed the board, and described her academic success as a “passion for learning.”

Also introduced were the following groups:

  • Special Olympic teams
  • UIL Academics teams
  • Career and Technical Education groups
  • American Math Competition (AMC) participants
  • LFHS and middle school band honorees
  • LFHS Lady Falcon soccer team
  • LFHS Lady Falcon softball team
  • LFHS girls’ track team
  • LFHS Falcons track team

Swantner Named Principal
Liz Swantner was approved by trustees to become principal at Resaca Middle School for the current school year.

Also approved to teaching positions for the current school year:

Rocio Leal, Journalism Teacher, LFHS

Gregorio M. Peña, P.E. Teacher, LFHS

Approved for teaching positions for the 2015-16 school year were:

Amanda J. Ellison, Biology Teacher, Los Fresnos United

Lawrence Ben Ellison, P.E. Teacher, LFHS

Trustees also approved employment contracts for 2015-16 and 2016-17 for administrative staff, and for 2015-16 for campus professional staff.

Trustees approved the following items on the Consent Agenda:

Minutes for Meetings held on April 13, 2015.

Budget Amendment #10 for Fiscal Year 2014-2015.

Ad-Valorem Tax Refunds for the Month of April 2015.

Cash Purchase of six school buses.

Memorandum of Understanding with Cameron County for the Summer Food Service Program.

2015-2016 Work Calendar for 260-Day Employees.

Dual Enrollment Agreement with TSTC.

Trustees approved the following items under Action Items:

Add, Revise or Delete LOCAL Policies as Recommended by TASB Policy Service and According to the Instruction Sheet for the TASB Localized Policy Manual Update 101 – First Reading.

Adoption of a Resolution to Implement Senate Bill 149 Relating to Alternative Methods for Satisfying Graduation Requirements Including the Use of Individual Graduation Committees.

Out of State Student Travel for Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) to Anaheim, Calif. June 23-28, 2015
