During the summer months the staff at Ethel L. Whipple Memorial Library will present the 2015 Summer Reading Program theme “Every Hero Has a Story”. The program provides reading and show & tell sessions for children of ages ranging from Pre-K to Fifth Grade.
During the week of June 15 through 17 the program honored “Heroes in my Community” as the Library hosted the Los Fresnos Volunteer Fire Department. Fire Marshall and Assistant Chief, Geronimo Sheldon, spoke to 4 and 5 year olds on Tuesday, June 16, about fire safety, what a firefighter’s job requires, and what kids can do to be safe from fires.
Assistant Chief, Walley Bennett, was present in full uniform for the children to see what a firefighter must wear to protect himself from fire as he performs his duties. The children present gave their full attention to Mr. Sheldon and Mr. Bennett and afterwards were treated to a demonstration of how a fire and rescue truck operates.
“I think it’s great that the library is keeping kids interested in doing things in the summer,’ said Mr. Sheldon.
“Whenever we’re called on to present or speak we do it,” said Sheldon. The summer program at the library will continue through July 15 with different Hero themes and for different age groups. For more information about the program please contact Ethel L. Whipple Memorial Library at (956)233-5330.
