LFCISD Programs of Study Better Equip Students for Life After High School
- Updated: October 9, 2015
The general meeting for the Los Fresnos Area Chamber of Commerce held at the community center on Tuesday, September 28 was among meetings that should not have been missed. Though attendance was uncommonly low, the information delivered by the guest speaker, Mr. Justin Stumbaugh, was the high point of the meeting. Mr. Stumbaugh is the Director of the Career and Technical Education office at Los Fresnos CISD.
The CTE office offers students 11 different programs of study to prepare them for the workforce immediately after graduating high school or to further their career path choice at the college level. Within these areas of instruction the student learns from educators who have experience in the field of their instruction.
For example a student wishes to become a welder through the Agriculture Program of Study, that student will learn from an instructor who is certified and has actually worked in that field. Mr. Stumbaugh stated that Los Fresnos CISD “is very blessed to have a large number of qualified instructors” ,compared to other districts, thus providing ample options for students with regards career choices.
The CTE office utilizes Labor Market Data reports to answer two basic questions; where are the jobs? (geographically) and what are they? This allows the CTE office to focus on what the student needs are for a specific job and the needs of the specific employer to provide a better match for both, in many cases right out of high school.
Those in attendance were very engaged in the presentation and had much good to say about what the CTE office is doing at LFCISD.
“The key for our youth is their resume… that hands on experience on their resume will give them such an edge” said Desi Martinez, Los Fresnos CDC Economic Development Liaison. For more information regarding the CTE programs of study please contact Mr. Justin Stumbaugh, CTE Director at (956)254-5205.
