Walking/Running to Better Health
- Updated: November 6, 2015
There are many ways to stay physically active. Walking is one of the simplest positive changes you can make to improve your health. Research has shown that the benefits of walking for at least 30 minutes a day can help you:
- Reduce the risk of heart disease
- Improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels
- Maintain body weight and lower the risk of obesity
- Enhance mental well being
- Reduce the risk of breast and colon cancer
- Reduce the risk of (type 2) diabetes
The City of Los Fresnos is currently offering a verity of Free exercise classes. Among the classes offered is a 5K Walk/Run class that is currently offered at the Los Fresnos Memorial Park Monday-Thursday at 7am. The class is designed to get you walking or running for at least 30 minutes a day 4 times a week. Walkers and runners from beginners to the advanced athletes are all welcome and encouraged to attend this class.
Moving with your goal in mind
• (Beginners)- When getting started aim to walk at a light intensity for at least 30 minutes 5 days a week.
• (Advanced) – If you’re looking to lose weight, aim for 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity 5 days a week.
Talk Test
Measure the intensity of your exercise to know if you’re pushing yourself too hard or not hard enough.
- You should be able to sing while working out at a light intensity level.
- If you’re exercising at a moderate intensity level, you should be able to carry on a conversation comfortably.
- If you become too winded or out of breath to carry on a conversation, the activity can be considered vigorous.
