Not Getting Enough Sleep?

So many of us are missing out on the recommended 8 hours of sleep each night and not really understanding the side effects it may bring. Here are a few very important reasons why you should prioritize getting to bed early.

1. Obesity
Late-night binges don’t just happen.

The body’s balance of two appetite hormones leptin and ghrelin become thrown out of order when a person needs more sleep, even after just one night. Another factor is that people who don’t sleep well may not exercise as well do to the feeling of being tired.

2. Heart disease
A lack of sleep can lead to high blood pressure.

People who do not get enough sleep have more stress hormones in their bodies, a condition that’s bad for the heart. Stress hormones can damage blood vessels. This can lead to high blood pressure, which can lead to heart disease.

3. Diabetes
Lack of sleep has been linked to diabetes.

After just one night of sleep deprivation, the body’s ability to handle moderate amounts of glucose becomes impaired. This, along with appetite hormones leptin and ghrelin, has been linked to diabetes.

All these conditions can be related to sleep in one way or another. In many cases, the effects are only seen after years of sleep loss. But in others, can be affected after one night of sleeping six hours or less.
