Clarisse Tudon from Los Cuates Middle School outlasted the field to win the 12th Annual Los Fresnos CISD Spelling Bee Saturday at the Los Fresnos United Cafeteria.
Tudon and Sydney Jo Peña of Los Fresnos Elementary were the only two remaining spellers left standing after four rounds of the bee. Both had chances to win the championship outright in the sixth and seventh rounds, respectively, but neither could correctly spell a second word after their challenge missed.
In the ninth round, Tudon correctly spelled her word while Peña missed. Tudon then had to correctly spell another word, which she did, to take the championship trophy.
Tudon now qualifies to participate in the Rio Grande Valley Spelling Bee scheduled March 5 at Texas State Technical College in Harlingen.
Four students tied for third place and will each receive trophies. They included defending champion Grecia Benavides of Olmito Elementary, Adilene Nieto of Liberty Memorial Middle School, Kassidi Arellano of Los Cuates Middle School, and Allan Peralez of Dora Romero Elementary School.
The students placed among the top three at their respective campus spelling bees held in December and January.
