100th Class Day of 100th Year: Fresnos for Los Fresnos

by Ronnie Zamora/LFCISD

Tuesday, February 2nd, was Fresnos for Los Fresnos Day.

On the 100th day of class in the 100th year since the first school opened in Los Fresnos 1915, fresno (ash) trees were planted in each of the 14 schools in the Los Fresnos CISD.

The tree-planting ceremonies were part of the activities during the school district’s Centennial celebration during the 2015-16 school year.

Historians point to the naming of Los Fresnos in 1915 because so many ash trees were growing in this immediate area.

Schools have different programs planned for the day, including music, poetry, student performances, speeches by alumni.

Several school choirs and other groups sang the Los Fresnos High School Alma Mater while the song played, and the Los Cuates Middle School Band performed it. Many also played the audio to the LFHS Fight Song and sang it as well.

At Dora Romero Elementary, students were dressed in brown and green and formed the shape of a tree. An aerial photo was taken.

Mercedes Cantu, who graduated from Los Fresnos High School in 1949, delivered speeches at Los Cuates Middle School, Dora Romero Elementary School and Los Fresnos United. at Los Cuates, she was escorted to the lectern by her grandson, a member of the LCMS band. The former Los Fresnos mayor’s stories about life in Los Fresnos in the 1940s surprised many students.

At Dora Romero Elementary, the daughters of the school’s namesake, addressed the audience. Irene Romero and Edna Medina shared memories of their mother, who was a Los Fresnos CISD trustee from 1977 to 1989.

At Los Fresnos High School, Trustee Ray Farias addressed the students. Farias was principal of Los Fresnos High School when the school moved in 1992 from its previous location where Los Cuates Middle School is now to the current location on Arroyo Boulevard.

The tree-planting ceremonies marked the third of four major events scheduled during the Centennial celebration.

In November, the Homecoming Parade featured floats designed by schools representing each decade since 1915. On Jan. 21-22, the Centennial Stage Show featured performances by LFHS Theater Arts students, a fashion show by decades by students of all 14 schools, and videos of significance to the school district’s history.

The Grand Celebration is scheduled Saturday, April 16, at Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium.
