The 36th Annual Cameron County Fair and Livestock Show began its three-day run at the Los Fresnos Rodeo Grounds this past Friday.

The Livestock Show is held in conjunction with the 27th Annual Los Fresnos PRCA Rodeo, which had shows scheduled Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

It’s the second of three shows for students in the Los Fresnos FFA program who have been preparing their animals for the spring show season.

Students from several Los Fresnos CISD schools showed their livestock and other animals, while others worked diligently on arts and crafts projects.

The shows provide opportunities for 4H and FFA members of Cameron County to display their animals and shop projects.

This year’s livestock show had 371 animal entries that included rabbits, lambs, goats, hogs and cattle. The home show had 198 entries that included arts and crafts, photography, woodworking and welding. Exhibitors were given the opportunity to auction the shop projects Friday evening after the steer competition if they chose to do so.

The baked goods competition was judged Saturday, with the auction afterward on Saturday afternoon, after the completion of the hog show.

Both auctions were free and open to the public.

The big show for students all over South Texas is the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show in Mercedes, which runs from March 11-20.
