Los Fresnos Officially Welcomes New Playground Equipment
- Updated: June 10, 2016
Ribbon Cutting Held at Memorial Park
Memorial Park is now home to new, yet unique, playground equipment, an upgrade from the previous equipment which was over 20 years old. The previous playground equipment was becoming old and worn out, so in a collaborative effort, the Park Advisory Board, Community Development Corporation of Los Fresnos (CDC) and the City Council found that technology advances made it more attractive to replace it with new and modern equipment.
The playground area now has many more play features for children of various ages and includes features to accommodate special needs children. The entire bottom area is wheel chair accessible allowing children to be able to enjoy the playground experience. There are 5 different slides, many different climbing areas and activities to keep the kids interested. “The coolest part is the pirate ship that rocks back and forth. Kids have a blast!” stated City Manager, Mark Milum. One feature that is immediately noticeable is the turf covered padded base that covers the entire playground floor which is a huge improvement from the previously gravel filled area.
The City of Los Fresnos is also planning a small park on the southwest side of town near Ninth Street and Nogal Street. The property was donated by the Montes/Cortez family and will be called the Montes/Cortez Park. The City received a $75,000 grant matched by the CDC and the City of Los Fresnos. The project will cost approximately $160,000 and should be complete by the end of 2016. The City hopes to be able to develop a similar small park on the southeast side of town and will gladly accept donations of a lot or two to make that happen.
