Los Fresnos Looking to Extend City Limits Westward
- Updated: June 10, 2016
Public Hearing on Proposing Annexation Proceedings Scheduled for June 14
The City of Los Fresnos is proposing to institute annexation proceedings to extend the city limits west of the current city limits approximately .7324 miles on the south side of W Hwy 100 covering 127.43 acres. The annexation would extend the city limits from Tapia’s Cafe west to the existing city limits of Brownsville and on the north side of W Hwy 100 west to the drainage ditch (see illustrated map area A2)
In an email communication, City Manager Mark Milum stated “This is a small area that has potential for growth and is currently between the City of Los Fresnos and the City of Brownsville in the County, outside of any city limits. This means there is little regulation as to what can be developed there since counties do not have authority to do that. This causes problems with retail businesses, commercial, industrial, residential or other potential development to be mixed in with one another. In most cases this is not desirable and usually causes property values to drop. If the City annexes this area it can be zoned properly so development can be planned, structured and consistent. Police protection will increase in this area with city police versus the county sheriff department. Animal control, weeded areas, vehicle control, building construction and other related items will be better with the city.”
The first public hearing is scheduled for June 14 at 6 p.m. The annexation of the area described on the illustrative map as area A2 is in line with the City of Los Fresnos long range plan to annex to FM 803 and Highway 100 in order to bring Los Fresnos United Campus inside the City limits of Los Fresnos. Additionally the City of Los Fresnos has been working with the City of Brownsville to exchange territory between the current proposed area to annex (A2) and the FM 803 and Highway 100 intersection and wants to be prepared for that to happen in September.
