- Updated: September 28, 2016
In 1970, Leo Aguilar was a senior and starting varsity fullback for the Los Fresnos Falcons and proudly wore jersey number 44.
Leo AguilarOn September 29, 1970, Leo suffered a severe neck injury during football practice which hospitalized him. Only 11 days later on October 10, Leo Aguilar lost his life at the age of 17.
No Los Fresnos Falcon has worn number 44 since.
In 1988, the Los Fresnos CISD Board of Trustees voted to rename Falcon Field to Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium.
The “Spirit of 44” will be brought back to life Friday.
A pre-game ceremony will honor the legacy of Leo Aguilar, and one Falcon player will wear number 44 for the four remaining home games. Linebacker Sebastian Gonzales will wear number 44 for Friday’s game. Leo’s brothers and family members will be on hand for the ceremony.
A replica jersey will be displayed on the sidelines throughout the game.
In honor of Leo’s leadership and commitment to his community, the Leo Aguilar Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to award scholarships to students of Los Fresnos High School to help further their education.
