More than 1,000 people attended the 3nd Annual Los Fresnos CISD Community Back-To-School Fair Wednesday, August 2nd, at the Los Fresnos United Dome.
Most came from families whose children needed school supplies and other items donated who sponsored the fair.
Four sponsors – DentaQuest, Driscoll Health Plan, Molina Health Care, and Superior Health Plan – donated backpacks and school supplies. The backpacks were distributed prior to the event children from families who had previously been identified as needy.
There were 48 vendors in attendance. They offered free services and information, many about health care.
Immunizations were offered for free to those who needed them. Valley Regional Medical Center offered free blood sugar and blood pressure checks. The University of Texas Health Sciences Center-Houston School of Public Health from the Brownsville campus provided a mobile clinic.
Stacks of uniforms for elementary and middle school students – donated by families whose children had outgrown them – were also available for those who needed them. The shirts were in various sizes of red, blue and green, and khaki pants were also available.
Southern Careers Institute had about 10 stylists available to provide free haircuts for children. At least one mother with five school-age children took advantage of the opportunity.
The event was coordinated by the Parental involvement Office and the Communities in Schools program.
