Light Up Literacy Campaign Ongoing in District

Los Fresnos CISD has taken on the Light Up Literacy challenge which began Monday.
The #LightUpLiteracy challenge is Alejandra Guzman’s innovative project as she was chosen as one of 36 global educators to be a part of the third cohort of TED-Ed Innovative Educators.
Her project was featured on the TED-Ed blog and in an issue of TechEdge Magazine.
Daily prizes are awarded to teachers at the campus level that provide evidence through either email or social media (using #lightupliteracy) that they are actively participating in the challenge. Teachers can send a short description, a picture, or a video that showcases the literacy strategy being used in the classroom to promote more reading and writing.
The ultimate goal of this project is to instill a love for reading and writing in all students in every grade level.
The project started as a pilot 12 months ago at two campuses – Los Fresnos United and Liberty Memorial Middle School. Nine campuses participated in the challenge last October. As of last week, all the teachers in all Los Fresnos CISD campuses have been trained and are up to the challenge.
The calendar has also been shared with other local school districts including Point Isabel, McAllen, San Benito, and Edcouch-Elsa.
