The LFHS/LFU Mariachi Nuevo Halcón won the Class 6A state championship at the Texas Association of Mariachi Educators (TAME) competition Feb. 10 at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg.
The LFHS/LFU three ensembles Mariachi all earned Division I Superior Ratings at the Regional UIL contest held Feb. 2-3 at San Benito High School.
The three groups – Mariachi Halconcitos (Beginners), Mariachi Halcón Dorado (JV), and Mariachi Nuevo Halcón (Varsity) received the highest ratings.
The varsity qualifies to compete in the 2018 UIL State Mariachi Festival Pilot will be held on February 23-24 in the Performing Arts Complex at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg.
Performances will be open to the general public. Admission for each session will be $15 for adults and $10 for students. No admission will be charged for children sixth grade and under. Tickets will be sold at the door. No advance purchase is available.
High schools are limited to enter one mariachi group – traditional or experimental – in the State Mariachi Festival, provided that the group earned a Division I rating at the current year’s region medium ensemble contest.
