Time to slip into your jeans and to put on your cowboy and cowgirl hats and boots because it is rodeo time y’all!
The bronco busting, bull riding, steer roping and barrel racing 2018 Los Fresnos Rodeo is this weekend and it will kick off with the first of three rodeo functions starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Now in its 29th year, the city’s biggest activity of a year is showing signs of being one for the books as more competitors have signed up for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association-sanctioned event in which thousands of dollars of prize money will be going to the best of the best.
The Los Fresnos Rodeo committee, which has been meeting every Tuesday, was informed recently that the number of participants during the three-day extravaganza is nearly at a new all time high.
Mark Milum, a committee member, shared the news with the members saying a total of 258 entries were logged for the rodeo.
“We have one of the highest number of competitors in many years,” he said. “This is good news.”
Many of the committee members expressed surprise to hear that.
The participants come from all over the United States, Canada and from as far as Australia.
Fridays function will include the first rodeo at 7:30 p.m. , fireworks and a live concert by Control, starting at 10 p.m.
Earlier in the day, the county fair and livestock show will be going on with the judging of show animals and the opening of the Heart of America carnival.
On Saturday, the Los Fresnos Rodeo Parade will start at 9:30 a.m., a rodeo at 7 p.m. and a second live concert given by Kevin Fowler immediately after the rodeo.
And Sunday, the last PRCA rodeo events will start at 3 p.m.
The doors at the rodeo grounds will open each day at 9 a.m. and will close at midnight each day.
Senior citizens 50 years and over will get a $1 discount on beverages.
