Martial Arts Students Win Big
- Updated: March 16, 2018

Students attending The Dojang Martial Arts Academy are getting positive results when it comes to competing with others in this same sporting field.
On Saturday, March 3, they participated in a tournament held in Weslaco and came back to Los Fresnos holding first, second and third place trophies in their respective categories.
Martial arts are techniques acquired through hard work and dedication to such unique style of combat practices usually taken for a number of reasons such as self-defense, for instance.
The Los Fresnos group has been under the direction of Rene Garza, a veteran martial arts instructor who has a repertoire of awards and recognitions dating back to several decades.
“This is the first time we competed here (in the Rio Grande Valley),” he said about the Weslaco tourney, “and we did very well.”
Garza said the students, ages ranging from four to 17 years of age, came back with a cache of trophies.
“It’s like these students are my own children,” he said. “It makes me real proud for what they have accomplished.”
Garza said he feels he is bringing the martial arts to town, adding the most important thing is that this is benefitting the towns people.
A digital learning specialist with the Los Fresnos school district, Garza said any one is welcome to enroll in his marital arts academy held in the city’s gym.
