Last Day of Class Brings Mixed Emotions to Students
- Updated: June 8, 2018

The last day of classes in Los Fresnos CISD brought out a range of emotions for students.
Some celebrated as they look forward to a summer break. Los Fresnos High School seniors will share their emotions at Commencement at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium.
But one particular group of students were hit the hardest of emotions on the last day of classes – the 800 fifth graders at the nine elementary schools.
Most fifth-grade students have been at the same elementary school for six or seven years – since kindergarten or pre-kindergarten. They have spent more half of their lives at elementary school.
So when Thursday came around, they realized that they would no longer be elementary school students – they would start at one of the district’s three middle schools in August.
Many of the emotional fifth-grade students could not hold back tears. They did not want to leave the place they called their second homes for many years.
Others hugged their teachers and did not want to let go.
When classes begin August 13 for the 2018-19 school year, the cycle begins again – and students will be one year older.
