Brownsville Museum of Fine Art Presents Inaugural Latino Comics Expo Brownsville

Brownsville, TX – From February 2-4, 2018, The Brownsville Museum of Fine Art will play host to Brownsville’s first ever Latino Comics Expo, celebrating the art and traditions of Latino culture.

Deyanira Ramirez, Administrative Director of the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art said, “We’re excited to present this amazing event that highlights Latino Art and Culture.” Latino Comics Expo Brownsville Co-Director Larry Rattner added, “The event is sure to inspire and educate attendees of all ages, from kids to young adults and even youthful grownups.”

“I really love seeing all the fans interact with the artists and discover a world of new material they didn’t know existed,” said Expo co-director and cartoonist Javier Hernandez.

Fans can expect to meet celebrated Latino artists, writers, filmmakers, and educators, as well as attend exciting workshops and panels. The Expo will also include the “Artist Alley” Exhibition Hall of exhibitors, where attendees can explore and purchase the newest art, comics, zines, graphic novels, media, and more.

The Museum of Fine Art will remain open throughout the weekend. Guests are welcome to experience Latino art and culture in between shopping the expo, watching and/or participating in the cosplay contest, attending a panel discussions featuring their favorite artist, and screening new award-winning short films.

Nationally-acclaimed artists presenting their work and meeting fans will include:

• Gilbert Hernandez: Cartoonist and writer; recipient of PEN Center USA’s Graphic Literature Award for Outstanding Body of Work; co-author of Love and Rockets

• Renée Victor: Critically Acclaimed Award-Winning Actress. Star of Coco, Paranormal Activity, Weeds and many other roles in films, television and stage.• Lalo Alcaraz: Award-winning author, artist, and cartoonist; creator of La Cucaracha

• Hector Cantu: Cartoonist, writer, and editor; co-creator of the comic strip Baldo

• Suzy Gonzalez: Artist, zinester, and organizer; co-publisher of Yes, Ma’am; co-founder of San Antonio Zine Fest.

• Tone Rodriguez: Cartoonist, work includes Simpson’s and Futurama comic books.

Expo events will include:
• Brownsville Latino Comics Expo Student Short Film Awards
• Cosplay Contest and After Party
• Panel Discussions
• Workshops

More celebrities, artist and events are being announced on an almost daily basis. Tickets are free for kids through 8th grade when accompanied by an adult. Student and senior tickets are $6.00, and adult tickets are $10.00

Early bird tickets purchased before February 3 are only $5.00 for students/seniors and $8.00 for adults. Tickets are available on the Latino Comics Expo Brownsville Expo website, at the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art, and at the Brownsville Convention & Visitors Bureau.

About the Latino Comics Expo Brownsville: The Brownsville Latino Comics Expo is a collaboration between Brownsville Museum of Fine Art and the Latino Comics Expo, and proceeds will benefit the Museum. Unlike other comic conventions that focus exclusively on entertainment, the Latino Comics Expo Brownsville celebrates education, diversity, expression, and inclusivity. Organizational co-sponsors include the Brownsville Mexican Consulate, the Brownsville Public Library, and the Brownsville Convention & Visitors Bureau.

About the Latino Comics Expo: The first ever Latino Comics Expo was held May 7-8, 2011 at the world-famous Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco, CA. It was a historic gathering for Latino comics and art. This California event is now held annually at the Long Beach Museum of Latin American Art.
