Going out to eat is getting better in Los Fresnos.
The city has a good number of restaurants whether these be franchise or locally-owned businesses.
Taqueria y Antojitos Mario belongs to the second group.
The eatery, which has been here since 2005, was recently remodeled thanks to a grant $5,000 grant it received from the Community Development Corp. of Los Fresnos.
Francisco Hernandez and Sofia Cortez own the business.
He said the money was used to facelift the building and to add additional space.
“We needed more room to accommodate our clients,” Hernandez said, “especially for special occasions like during graduation and the annual rodeo.”
He said he has many years of experience as a cook working for several restaurants on South Padre Island.
The taqueria, which the Hernandez named after their son Mario, started out of a trailer 14 years ago and relocated to its existing location at 116 E. Ocean Blvd. in 2010.
Besides the typical tacos, the eatery has tortas, hamburgers and features seafood each Friday.
“Business has been going well for us.” Hernandez said. “One of our best sellers is a thirteen inch flour tortilla stuffed with whatever food item a client wants.”
