Los Fresnos News
The Lady Falcons faced off against the Harlingen Lady Cardinals in another round of 32-6A softball during spring break. After the Falcons suffered a close loss to the Lady Panthers, Los Fresnos was looking to bounce back and get a huge win over the Lady Cardinals. Los Fresnos swept Harlingen in 2021, and with Harlingen coming off two losses to Weslaco and San Benito, both teams had a lot at stake. A Beautiful day that had wind gusts up to 30-35 miles an hour. With the wind blowing from the southeast in a ballpark that faces northwest, this was certainly going to be a recipe for a high-scoring game.
Los Fresnos sent a message early on as Left Fielder Victoria Altamirano hit a towering two-run home run to give the Lady Falcons the lead. Then the next batter up, Catcher Natasha Gonzalez hit a solo home run to make it a 3-0 game. Harlingen would respond with clutch hitting as Emilia Salinas, Chloe Gracida and Savannah Ramirez had three straight RBI’s to tie the game up at 3-3.
In the top of the second inning, Designated Player Dakota Martinez brought in Avry Hayes with an RBI Double. The Power hitting continued for the Falcons as Shortstop Andrea Guevara delivered with a two-run home run to take a 6-3 lead in the ball game.
Harlingen would then respond off two hits by Charlise Ybarra and Andrea Salinas. Third Baseman Lilly Rocha delivered a three-run home run to tie it up at 6-6. Later a throwing error allowed Harlingen to score a run to make it 7-6. Los Fresnos trailed for the first time in the game.
Los Fresnos would not be down for long as the Falcons managed to score eight runs as RBI’s by Martinez, Rodriguez, Perez, and a three-run home run by Krystal Perez to give the Lady Falcons a 14-7 lead in the game. Lady Falcons managed to maintain control, however, Harlingen managed to answer back and take a 17-14 lead as great hitting by Ramirez, Gracida, Ybarra and a solo home run by Madison Vargas allowed the Lady Cardinals to be back on top.
Lady Falcons, despite trailing once again, managed to put up eight runs once again as Katelynn Perez and Natasha Gonzalez both hit two-run home runs. Perez Later drove an RBI single later on. Harlingen’s Athena Linnartz delivered a solo home run to allow Harlingen to grab a run back, but the excellent defense allowed Los Fresnos to secure the win 22 to 18.
In what arguably can be labeled as the game of the season, Harlingen and Los Fresnos combined for 10 home runs and 40 total runs scored in a 2 hour and 57-minute ballgame. Wind truly did play a factor in the ballgame. Los Fresnos will play Harlingen for round two at home on Tuesday, April 12.
