Los Fresnos Basketball in Hidalgo Classic

The Los Fresnos Falcons took part in the annual Hidalgo Pirate Classic Basketball Tournament. One of the bigger tournaments on the calendar for the Falcons, Los Fresnos has always had good showings in previous years, and this year proved to be no different for Marco Hinojosa’s Ball club.


To open up pool play, the Falcons went 2-0 in day one. In the opening match, the Falcons were able to knock off STX, and PSJA North in dominating fashion. Against the Saints, Los Fresnos walloped with a final score of 91-51. Against PSJA North, the Falcons held control of the game and never looked back, winning 73-52.


Day two on Friday meant the end of pool play and bracket games would begin. In their final Pool matchup, the Falcons took on 4A powerhouse La Feria. In a close game that saw the Falcons get outscored in two quarters by the Lions, Los Fresnos managed to slip away late in the game and take the win 52-44.


For their first round of bracket play, the Falcons took on Corpus Christi Ray. This season, Los Fresnos is 2-0 against Corpus schools, having defeated Miller and Moody on Thanksgiving week. The Falcons continued the winning trend against Ray. After the Texans took the one point lead at the end of the first quarter, the Falcons would be more consistent and go on to outscore the Texans in the next three quarters to win 66-54.


Now onto championship Saturday, the Falcons opened up against tournament host Hidalgo. In a repeat of their matchup against CC Ray, the Falcons were outscored in the first quarter, but were able to shift the momentum in their next two quarters. Despite the Pirates playing well in the fourth, Los Fresnos held on to win 70-53.


In the championship game, Los Fresnos took on Houston Stafford. Stafford dominated the first two quarters with strong defense and great offense. The Spartans were able to lead 37-29 at the half. The Falcons who are known to be a resilient team, mounted a comeback. A 25-point third quarter allowed the Falcons to stay in the game. Despite a more dominant second half, the Stafford Spartans held on to win 74-71.


Los Fresnos finished 5-1 in tournament play, as well as in second place. Falcons Gio Galvan and Andrew Munoz were selected to the All tournament team.


The Falcons now sit 15-4 and will travel to the Alamo City to play in the annual Diamondbacker Invitational at San Antonio Reagan High School.
