Student Nonprofit Organization Helps to Enhance City Butterfly Garden

By Mike Villarreal

At the beginning of September 2025, Economic Development Coordinator Jeffrey Rosas spearheaded an initiative involving Harvest the Valley, a dynamic nonprofit organization managed by dedicated students from Los Fresnos High School. Together, they focused on revitalizing and enhancing the butterfly garden located within the Los Fresnos Nature Park. This collaborative effort not only beautifies the park but also provides crucial support for local butterfly populations and promotes environmental awareness among the community.

This project is a key component of the corporation’s mission, which seeks to enrich the quality of life in the community by fostering sustainable practices and green spaces.

The Los Fresnos Economic Development Corporation plays a multifaceted role in the area. It is committed to both stimulating economic growth and enhancing community well-being. Harvest the Valley stands out as a nonprofit organization with a strong environmental focus, engaging in various community service projects throughout the scenic Rio Grande Valley of Texas. This collaborative model empowers students to tap into external resources and expertise, significantly enhancing the quality and impact of their projects. Such partnerships, which include collaborations with government agencies, local businesses, and other nonprofit organizations, enable Harvest the Valley to successfully achieve its mission.

As a student-run initiative, Harvest the Valley encourages community engagement and support. The most effective way for residents to show their backing is by getting involved in or contributing to the various community service projects, including the butterfly garden initiative at the Los Fresnos Nature Park. This involvement not only fosters a sense of community but also helps instill a lasting appreciation for the environment in future generations.
