Los Fresnos News
After a lengthy Non-District that consisted of tournaments, and everything in between, the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons Basketball Team has officially began District Play.
A 12-12 record in non-district, the Lady Falcons were looking to start 32-6A play on the right track against San Benito. During the 2023-24 Campaign, the Lady Falcons split the season series against San Benito, losing the first meeting on January 17 (54-40). Upon the second meeting on February 2, Los Fresnos clashed with and defeated San Benito in a thriller 33-31.
Both these teams have given each other some good battles over the years and it was the case again this season.
From the start, both teams were off! Eager to win the district opener, the Lady Falcons and Lady Greyhounds were keeping each other close. A back and forth battle that came down to the wire, ultimately came down to be decided by three points. The Lady Falcons thanks to a late surge, were able to capture the win 50-47.
Now 1-0, the Lady Falcons will turn their attention to Brownsville Veterans Memorial, who dropped a close matchup to Harlingen 43-41.
As mentioned during volleyball season, being in a small district like 32-6A, every game is a “must win” scenario as four the five teams would punch their ticket to the 6A State Playoffs come February.
The remainder of District play looks like this. The Lady Falcons will take on Brownsville Veterans Memorial up next. Harlingen on January 14, and Brownsville Hanna on January 17. The Lady Falcons will then take a week off and begin the second half of District against San Benito on January 24.
Last season, Los Fresnos finished 32-6A with a 5-5 District record. This season, the Lady Falcons look to bring home a third district title to Los Fresnos following volleyball and football.
