September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

Statistics show that one in every 3 children in the United States is overweight or obese. Childhood obesity puts children at risk for health problems that were once seen only in adults, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

The good news is that childhood obesity can be prevented.

We’ve all been told over and over the importance of eating healthy and the importance of exercise. We know what must be done. It’s time we do it! Los Fresnos let’s think preventative.

The plan: Incorporate one nutritional change and physical change into your family’s daily regimen. Big or small the decision is yours and the benefits are your families.

Example of a Nutritional Change: Adding a small salad to your dinner plate.

Example of a Physical Change: Going for a 30 minute walk with your family after dinner.

As your Community Health Worker I’m happy to announce Los Fresnos is getting healthier! More and more people are looking to improve their quality of life by exercising and making healthier choices in their diets. We’ve seen a tremendous response from the Free exercise classes being offered at the Los Fresnos Memorial Park Mon-Fri at 8:30 am.

For your children’s after school physical Activity, stop by the Boy’s and Girl’s club of Los Fresnos offering Fitness and Nutrition support on Wednesday’s from 3-6:30 pm. and a variety of classes Mon-Fri from 3-6:30 pm.

The Green Ghost Academy located on Hwy 100 next to Charlie Clark Nissan is offering “Free” Adults and Children’s Karate, Jujitsu and Wrestling classes. Children’s classes are Mon-Wed from 4:30-5:30 pm. Adult classes are Mon-Thur 5:30-6:30 pm.

Additional after school programs such as the Ace program are offered at Elementary schools throughout Los Fresnos.
