- Updated: May 4, 2015
Mr. Manuel Abrego, who has served the City of Los Fresnos for many years, was awarded the Rio Grande Valley Walk of Fame award. Since Abrego was unable to be present in Hidalgo where he was inducted to the RGV Walk of Fame he received his award at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, April 14, 2015.
The RGV Walk of Fame is located outside the State Farm Arena in the City of Hidalgo. The city of Hidalgo, BorderFest Association, the Hidalgo Chamber of Commerce and City of Hidalgo Texas Municipal Facilities Corporation established the RGV Walk of Fame to honor and celebrate the lives, achievements and significant civic contributions of people in the Valley.
Mr. Abrego has a long standing history of exemplary service to Los Fresnos. “Mr. Abrego has worked to make our community a pleasant place to live. He has been involved in making decisions in creating a city park, city hall, police station, community building, water tower, repaving most of city streets, expanding our sewer plant, and building of a new high school” said Mayor Polo Narvaez as he read many of Mr. Abrego’s accolades.
Abrego has also been very active in community and volunteer work and active in civic and non-profit organizations. Abrego has also served on several Boards for the City, School District, Housing Authority, served as Councilman and twice as Mayor. After receiving the award, Abrego addressed the council “as I retire I challenge you guys to continue”.
