Homecoming Parade To Begin Year-Long Centennial Celebration
- Updated: October 16, 2015
It’s been 100 years since the first school opened in Los Fresnos. Now, it’s time to reminisce and enjoy a big birthday.
The Los Fresnos CISD will begin its centennial celebration with the Centennial Homecoming Parade at 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, through the streets of the city.
Schools throughout the district will participate with floats depicting different decades. Each campus has chosen a decade and its float will represent that decade. There will also be the traditional participation of bands, cheer squads, and dance teams.
“We’re inviting the entire community to participate in the parade and celebrate with us,” Superintendent Gonzalo Salazar said. “It would be great to see classic cars and other items to depict history.”
Community entries and classic vehicles are encouraged to participate.
The parade will begin at its traditional starting point at the Los Fresnos Community Center at East Second and Brazil streets. The parade will proceed east on Second Street and turn north on Arroyo Boulevard. The one-mile long parade will conclude at Los Fresnos High School with the traditional burning of the LF letters.
The Homecoming football game is Friday, Nov. 6, at Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium. Alumni groups, such as the LFHS Class of 1965 which plans to attend, are encouraged to participate.
To participate in the parade, contact the Los Fresnos CISD Communications and Marketing Office at 956-254-5098.
A workshop was held Sept. 24 with community members of the Centennial Committee, who suggested ideas for centennial events and how they could participate.
Other activities planned for the centennial anniversary include the planting of fresno (Spanish word for ash) trees at each campus on the 100th day of classes Feb. 2, and the Grand Celebration April 16 at Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium.
A play showcasing the history of the school district by the LFHS Theatre Arts Department is also planned.
