Announcing the 2016 Health Champions of the Rio Grande Valley

Brownsville, TX – The Community Advisory Board (CAB) announces the recipients of the 2016 Health Champions of the Rio Grande Valley Awards. These organizations were recognized for making strides toward building healthier communities through improvements in policies, systems and environmental changes.
- 7 at 7 Bike Ride Group – An initiative started by Fred Tamez to motivate co-workers and friends who often complained about tiredness, overweight, depression and other illnesses.
- Hope 4 Kids – Hope 4 Kids Scholarship program helps children with diabetes to participate in a 6-month program that provides nutritional counseling, child-group exercise, plus a dynamic family support group.
- Friends of West Rail Trail – Through public meetings, community events, and social media, Friends of the West Rail Trail (FWRT) has been active in supporting the conversion of a railway into a car-free nature trail.
- City of Los Fresnos Wellness Program – A program supported by local instructors and volunteers to encourage the community to live healthy and active lifestyles.
- buildingcommunityWorkshop – bcWorkshop is a Texas based nonprofit community design center seeking to improve the livability and viability of communities through the practice of thoughtful design and creation.
“The UT School of Public Health and its Community Advisory Board are committed to building on the many assets in our communities to create a culture of health and wellbeing,” said Lisa Mitchell-Bennett, MA, MPH, senior research associate at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Public Health – Brownsville Regional Campus. “It is a privilege to honor this year’s Health Champions, individuals and organizations that inspire and challenge through creative solutions that improve the lives of families in the Rio Grande Valley.”
The Community Advisory Board (CAB) was created in 2003 by The School of Public Health – Brownsville Regional Campus as a way to connect the graduate school with the community and to provide accountability and feedback to the researchers.
The CAB is comprised of local leaders from nonprofits, school districts, city and county government, corporations, hospital administrators, local businesses, religious organizations and other community members who are interested in working together to improve community health.
