Fragile Planet Wildlife Park Features New Safari Experience
- Updated: June 14, 2024
By Mike Villarreal
Fragile Planet Wildlife Park is situated in Los Fresnos and offers a wonderful opportunity to see exotic animals from around the world right here in the Rio Grande Valley. The 32-acre park aims to educate visitors about conservation through unique animal encounters.
Originally located in New York, Fragile Planet Wildlife Park, also known as FPWP, began as a mobile educational animal encounter and has now found its permanent home in the valley. The park’s decision to relocate to South Texas was influenced by the presence of the ocelot, one of the animals they care for, native to the valley. Co-owned by Gabe Ligon, Nick Stacey, and Tyler Thomas, the park is located off Old Port Road in Los Fresnos and has been transformed into a top-notch wildlife park housing various exotic animals typically found only in zoos.
Some of the park’s animals are endangered or critically endangered, and the park’s mission is to raise public awareness about how to help these endangered animals in the wild. The climate in the valley is well-suited for the care of many of these animals, and those requiring special accommodations are provided with individual care.
Fragile Planet Wildlife Park is excited to announce the opening of the RGV Safari Experience, which will commence on June 8, 2024. Visitors will have the opportunity to witness the graceful Blackbuck Antelope galloping across the plains, observe the unique double-humped back of a Bactrian Camel, or marvel at the majestic Water Buffalo wallowing in their pond. Additionally, visitors can encounter other animals such as Zebras, Watus, Ostriches, African Crested Porcupines, Swamp Wallabies, Père David’s Deer, and more. In addition to interactive animal encounters, the park also offers ATV and Jeep private tours with expert guides.
The most budget-friendly option is the Safari Wagon Ride Adventure, which starts at just $15.00 and includes admission to the Kangaroo and Wallaby Walkabout, Petting Zoo, and Safari Park. The gates open at 8:00 a.m., and the Safari Wagon Tours are available every hour without the need for booking.
The Wildlife Alive Tour, priced at $20.00 per person, with children two and under admitted free, has tour times at 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m.
This 1 to 1 ½ hour tour allows visitors to encounter the park’s off-exhibit animals and provides opportunities to feed the Otters, the Fly River Turtles, and more. Visitors can also meet the monkeys and explore the rainforest floor while being introduced to hundreds of Poison Dart Frogs and other amphibians from around the world.
The Encounter Experience Tour is a one-hour experience priced at $25.00 per person, with children two and under admitted free. Tour times are 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. This animal encounter offers visitors an in-depth and close encounter with some furry and friendly friends.
Tour reservations can be made through the website. It is recommended that you book your tour 24 hours in advance to secure your preferred time slot. Tours are non-refundable, but the park is happy to reschedule if needed.
Food is not allowed on the grounds unless arranged in advance, and there are no picnic areas or concessions. Visitors may bring drinks or purchase water bottles for $2.00 each.
When visiting the park, guests are required to stay with their guide and not wander on their own. They are also asked not to attempt to touch any animals unless instructed to do so. The park pathways are natural ground, so closed-toed shoes are required.
The Rio Grande Valley can be very hot in the summer, so it is recommended to wear light and airy attire and apply sunscreen. Remember to bring your camera or use your phone to capture memories during your tour.
