New Pickleball Court Opens in Brownsville
- Updated: January 11, 2025
By Mike Villarreal
Recently, a grand opening ceremony and ribbon-cutting event took place at Pedro “Pete” Benavides Park to celebrate the addition of new Pickleball Courts. This event was held on Monday, December 30, 2024, at 9:30 AM at 2055 S. Browne Ave. in Brownsville, Texas.
In attendance were Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino Jr., along with the following commissioners: Precinct 1 Commissioner Sofia C. Benavides, Precinct 2 Commissioner Joey Lopez, Precinct 3 Commissioner David A. Garza, and Precinct 4 Commissioner Gus Ruiz.
The new Pickleball Courts at Pedro “Pete” Benavides Park are the latest enhancement to the park’s recreational offerings. They are located adjacent to the newly constructed covered basketball courts and consist of two Pickleball Courts, each measuring 20 feet by 40 feet. A canopy shade structure separates the courts, providing rest areas for players and seating for spectators. The courts feature a vibrant orange and blue surface that complements the design of the nearby basketball courts.
The total cost of developing the Pickleball Courts was approximately $183,000. This amount covers the nets, shade structure, landscaping, architectural fencing, and picnic tables. The construction was completed by A&Z Custom Manufacturing and funded through the 2024 Certificate of Obligation.
The Cameron County Commissioners are excited about this new addition to Pedro “Pete” Benavides Park.
The Pickleball Courts will offer the community an excellent opportunity to stay active and enjoy the outdoors. “It’s important to continue improving our county parks and the amenities available,” stated Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino Jr. “The county commissioners and I are committed to providing safe, beautiful, and active outdoor spaces for our residents.”
Pedro “Pete” Benavides Park, located in Cameron County Precinct 1, provides a range of recreational amenities, including baseball fields, soccer fields, walking trails, nature trails, mountain bike trails, a splash pad, a playground, a picnic pavilion, picnic shelters, a covered basketball court, an exercise court, a volleyball court, beautiful landscaping, and restrooms.
