85th Annual Texas International Fishing Tournament is Right Around the Corner

By Mike Villarreal

Surrounded by the sparkling waters of Laguna Madre Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, Port Isabel and South Padre Island will host Texas’s largest saltwater fishing tournament, the Texas International Fishing Tournament (TIFT). This year, the tournament will take place from July 30 to August 3, 2025, marking its 85th annual event and attracting hundreds of anglers from across the nation.

As Texas’s largest saltwater fishing tournament, TIFT draws over 1,500 anglers and more than 500 boats, making it a must-see event for fishing enthusiasts and families alike. Every child registered in the tournament will receive a trophy for their efforts, highlighting TIFT’s commitment to family-friendly fun.

The tournament features three divisions: bay, tarpon, and offshore, allowing fishermen of all ages to showcase their skills and compete across various categories. With a wide range of fishing activities, TIFT brings together enthusiasts and professionals for an exciting week of angling competitions in the beautiful setting of South Texas waters. Join us at South Point Marina in Port Isabel on Friday, August 1, and Saturday, August 2, to witness the thrilling weigh-ins of the 85th Texas International Fishing Tournament!

On the bustling dockside, a vibrant crowd of thousands of eager spectators will gather to see an awe-inspiring display of angling skills. Big boats returning from offshore expeditions will proudly showcase their bountiful catches of majestic blue marlin, elegant white marlin, and graceful sailfish. Meanwhile, in the tranquil bay, skilled anglers will exhibit their prized catches of speckled trout, redfish, and flounder during the tournament.

Amidst the vibrant atmosphere, one of the most heartwarming spectacles will unfold at the weigh docks as junior anglers carefully present their diverse array of catches. From small piggy perch to remarkable hauls worthy of seasoned adult anglers, the weigh docks become a stage for youthful determination and achievement. Every young participant registered in the tournament is honored with a well-deserved trophy, commemorating their dedication and skill in the art of fishing.

The Texas International Fishing Tournament has a rich history dating back to 1933 when Doc J.A. Hockaday founded it. The primary goal behind its inception was to showcase the exceptional fishing opportunities that the Rio Grande Valley offers to anglers from around the world. Over the years, TIFT has consistently remained an annual event, with the exception of World War II. It has transformed from its humble beginnings as a tarpon-fishing competition to become Texas’s largest and most prestigious saltwater tournament. TIFT is renowned for providing a welcoming environment for all participants, combining the excitement of competitive fishing with wholesome family entertainment.

The fishing tournament offers an extensive selection of divisions, catering to various preferences, including bay, offshore, fly, and tarpon fishing. This diversity ensures that every angler has the opportunity to participate in their preferred fishing style. Typically scheduled for the first weekend in August, the event can draw upwards of 1,500 anglers and 500 boats, making it a significant and well-attended occasion.

Don’t miss out on the excitement, community spirit, and unforgettable moments that make TIFT a cherished tradition. For more information and photos, check the Texas International Fishing Tournament’s Facebook page.
