On New Year’s eve, The Los Fresnos Falcons and Lady Falcons competed in a District DoubleHeader against the Brownsville Rivera Raiders and Lady Raiders. The Lady Falcons who were 1-1 in district play, looked to keep a positive record going, while the Falcons looked to kick off District Play with a win and end 2021 on a high note.
The Lady Falcons who were coming off a big District win over Donna North looked to continue their winning ways. From the tipoff, Los Fresnos played with sheer dominance and maintained control from the start. The defense also was a key factor in the matchup as Los Fresnos outscored Brownsville Rivera and limited the Lady Raiders to less than 10 points each quarter. The Lady Falcons held on to win 56-20 over Brownsville Rivera. Key Players for the Lady Falcons included Sarahi Jones, Maritza Ortega, and Gaby Garrido.
The next matchup was Boys Action as The Falcons looked to kick off district play with a win. Rivera quickly struck first to grab control and maintained it during the first quarter to make it 15 to 7. The Falcons answered back, however despite Los Fresnos out-scoring Rivera in the second quarter, The Raiders led 24 to 17 at the half. In the third quarter, The Falcons and the Raiders were involved in a very close matchup as Rivera outscored Los Fresnos by just one point. The Falcons stepped up and gained the upper hand in the fourth quarter in another close matchup. Rivera managed to tack on 11 points to regain control and win 50 to 46. JJ Salazar and Keane Ogao had a strong performance, combining for 31 points in the game.
With the District Schedule still young, both the Falcons and Lady Falcons look to capture district gold and punch their tickets to the postseason.
