October is an Important Month for Breast Cancer Awareness

By Mike Villarreal

October is a significant month for raising awareness about breast cancer and promoting early detection through Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM), an international campaign observed every October. The campaign aims to educate and inform people about breast cancer and the importance of early detection.

Breast cancer is a complex disease characterized by the formation of malignant (cancer) cells in the breast tissues, affecting both women and men. Various tests are available to determine the spread and severity of breast cancer, and an annual mammogram is highly recommended for early detection, which can significantly impact treatment outcomes.

In the year 2024, it is projected that 310,720 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the United States. Despite these concerning statistics, it is important to note that there are over 4 million breast cancer survivors in the country. Regrettably, it is expected that 42,250 women will lose their lives to breast cancer in 2024, underscoring the critical need for ongoing awareness campaigns and research initiatives.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women, after skin cancer, with approximately 13% of the female population at risk of developing it in their lifetime. In 2024, 30% of all new female cancer diagnoses are projected to be breast cancer, with women being diagnosed with breast cancer every 2 minutes in the United States.

The history of Breast Cancer Awareness Month dates back to 1985, when it was founded in collaboration with the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries, now part of AstraZeneca. The primary goal of the campaign has always been to advocate for mammography as the best defense against breast cancer. Additionally, in 1993, Evelyn Lauder, the Senior Corporate Vice-President of the Estee Lauder Company, established the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and introduced the Pink Ribbon as its symbol.

Globally, breast cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers affecting women, with over two million new cases reported worldwide in 2018. Notably, North America has the highest incidence of breast cancer, particularly in developed regions. This has led to increased international interest in raising awareness about breast cancer due to its widespread impact.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, various educational programs, science forums, and informational materials are deployed to disseminate crucial information to the public. Special events, including National Mammography Day in the United States, center around the importance of early detection and screenings for breast cancer. Furthermore, fundraising initiatives such as auctions, concerts, walks, runs, and charity events are organized worldwide, with the funds collected contributing to local, international, or national breast cancer research efforts. Additionally, international cancer organizations and scientific conferences are coordinated in alignment with awareness campaigns to advance research and awareness further.
