The Los Fresnos CISD held its Fire Prevention Safety Week from October 6th through October 12th. The Los Fresnos Fire Department visited elementary schools in Los Fresnos to show the importance of fire safety. They shared knowledge about fire safety and guidance on what to do and what not to do during a fire emergency. The children looked closely at the fire trucks and equipment for fighting fires.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign theme is “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!™.” This campaign is dedicated to educating everyone about the crucial role of working smoke alarms in preventing fire-related fatalities in homes.

Having a fire alarm in your home is crucial as it is one of the most critical measures to manage your fire risk. Fire alarms save lives and prevent property damage, among other benefits. If you don’t already have a fire alarm, consider adding this important safety feature as soon as possible. Remember to conduct regular inspections and tests. Ensure all smoke detectors are functional, and having a fire extinguisher at home is crucial.

It is key to remember that fire safety education is essential for everyone, including children, teens, and adults. Knowing the first steps to take when a fire breaks out is essential: stay calm and avoid panicking. This is why every family member should practice fire safety and fire drills. There are several precautions and steps to take in case of a fire. Always remember to call 911 for emergencies. If you see smoke, crawl out of the building. Remember to STOP, DROP, and ROLL if you are on fire!

Since 1922, the NFPA has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance, making it our country’s longest-running public health event. During Fire Prevention Week, children, adults, and teachers learn how to stay safe in case of a fire. Firefighters provide lifesaving public education to decrease the number of casualties caused by fires drastically.
