Los Fresnos CISD Celebrates National Custodian Day

By Mike Villarreal

On October 2, 2024, the Los Fresnos CISD joyously celebrated National Custodian Day to honor the dedicated custodial staff. These unsung heroes work tirelessly behind the scenes, ensuring that students and staff thrive in a clean, safe, and conducive learning and personal development environment.

The district would like to thank these fantastic individuals who helped to create a safe and welcoming space for everyone. From ensuring the cleanliness of our classrooms to promptly addressing any maintenance issues, your hard work and dedication do not go unnoticed.

National Custodian Day, also known as National Custodial Worker Recognition Day, was started in 1985 to honor and recognize the work of custodians and other caretakers. This day aims to recognize custodians’ often overlooked and under-appreciated work. Their efforts keep our public areas clean, functional, and safe, contributing significantly to our community’s well-being. Their job is not just integral; it’s the backbone of our community, and we sincerely appreciate them.

This day is celebrated every year on October 2 and honors all caretakers and custodians in hospitals, schools, museums, office buildings, churches, and other buildings. There are many ways to celebrate this day and to show appreciation. We encourage everyone to participate in the celebration. Some schools, businesses, or government buildings will give special attention to custodians with a school assembly or coffee and donuts. Even a simple ‘thank you’ can go a long way.

Caretakers and custodians are responsible for many tasks, from cleaning and maintaining buildings to ensuring public health, creating safe and enjoyable workspaces, and promoting waste reduction and recycling. Their roles are not just important; they are crucial to our daily lives, and we deeply respect and value their contributions.

The men and women who work as custodians often do so behind the scenes, with their efforts mostly going unnoticed. By recognizing their work, you can foster a sense of respect and boost their morale, making them feel more appreciated and integral to our community.

Many people work as custodians or caretakers who may never be noticed, but the next time you go somewhere and see how clean the area is, remember who has to clean and maintain these areas daily.
Suppose you are wondering how to show appreciation to someone who works in this area. In that case, you can give them a gift, a thank you card, or a gift certificate, or provide them with a compliment and let them know how much you appreciate their dedication and hard work.

A lot of time, we take for granted what custodians do for us, but the next time you see one, you can give them a simple thanks, and I’m sure it will go a long way as they are not looking for this, but it will surely make their day by showing them how much we appreciate the work they do.
