Olmito Nature Park is Making Great Progress

The development of Phase I of Olmito Nature Park is advancing at a promising pace. This phase is designed to include a diverse array of amenities situated along the picturesque shores of Resaca Lake in Olmito, creating an engaging environment for visitors of all ages. Planned features include well-maintained nature trails that wind through lush landscapes, inviting picnic areas equipped with tables and grills, accessible fishing piers, and bird-watching overlooks that offer meander through lush landscapes, inviting picnic areas equipped with tables and grills, accessible fishing piers, and birdwatching overlooks that provide stunning views of the natural surroundings. Additional facilities will include comfort stations and permeable parking areas designed to minimize environmental impact, as well as a Constable substation to enhance safety and security within the park. Informative interpretive signage will educate visitors about the local flora and fauna, while a nature-themed playground will offer children a place to explore and play. A centrally located pavilion will serve as a gathering spot for community events and activities. The anticipation surrounding the completion of this project is truly exciting!


In 2019, Frank Michael McKinney and Jane E. McKinney made a generous contribution of approximately 39.16 acres of land to Cameron County for the development of this nature park. When completed, Olmito Nature Park will encompass a total area of 40 acres, a testament to the McKinney family’s philanthropic spirit and the unwavering support from Cameron County. To date, funding secured by Cameron County from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) includes a $750,000 Outdoor Recreational Grant, a $52,500 Boating Access Planning Grant, $250,000 from the Trails Grant Program, and $500,000 from the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation, all of which will facilitate the park’s development.

  • Two birdwatching towers strategically placed for optimal viewing of local bird species and the picturesque landscape.
  • A 20-space RV campground equipped with necessary amenities for visitors who wish to immerse themselves in nature overnight.
  • A native brush demonstration area showcasing local plant species and their ecological significance.
  • Inclusive features designed for all visitors, including:

  • A family-friendly splash pad for refreshing play during hot summer days.
